Our Why

MINDFULLY CREATED

WHAT DOES OUR NAME MEAN?

Apothenne [uh-poth-en] is the combination of the words "apothecary" and "doyenne." Not familiar with that second term?

doyenne

[doi-en; French dwa-yen]

1. a woman who is the senior member, as in age or rank, and the most respected or prominent person in a particular group, class, profession or field; a kickass female leader.

It is our hope that by combining these two words, as a company, Apothenne will pay homage to fellow makers and women everywhere.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A 100% SOY WAX CANDLE?

It is more environmentally friendly. Soy wax is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans. This type of wax is non-toxic and burns cleaner, allowing for a longer lifespan than other waxes. Soy wax burns at a lower melting point so it will not burn or stain surfaces and if spilled, it is easier to clean up and comes out of fabrics in the wash. Soybeans are vegetables, so they are biodegradable as well... our Earth likes this!

WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL? WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Traditional candles are made with paraffin wax — the bottom of the barrel of petroleum. We're not kidding. Paraffin contains up to 11 carcinogenic compounds deemed 'toxic air contaminants' by the State of California. When paraffin wax candles are burned, the candle soot particles contain many of the same compounds as burning diesel fuel. Yeah, disgusting — we know.

The soot that paraffin wax emits can also blacken walls, ceilings, furniture, and contaminate ventilation ductwork in your home. We don't want to breathe in toxic carcinogens, and we don't want you to either!
